hello everybody!! this isn't really lyric, tab or chord charts, but as the thread title suggests, what does a capo actually do?
Some would suggest that you use a capo when the key of a song that you want to sing is too low or high, so you put the capo in place to make the key lower or higher.
More experienced musicians would come to a point of realization when playing with other instruments like the piano or trumpet etc etc etc that you can't play song in Eb.
Firstly, the notes along the A string of the guitar: *ps. i'm using A because i suppose its easier to see...
A A# B C C# D D# E F F# G G#
What happens when the capo is on the first fret? it moves the chord you are playing half step up. (or a semi-tone for some)
for example.. Say you play G with the capo on the first fret, in essence you're actually playing G# or Ab.. And you play G with the capo in the second fret, you're actually playing an A..
try it!

yeah totally, its quite smart actually, how people can come up with something like that... anyways to top things up, i recently was with timmy and eugene called to ask us to get a capo urgently, so we went to this shop near my place. and they only had 2 different kinds of capo. the old, stretchy cloth one and this new thing from planet waves, which i really don't like to use(waste my money), i've been using the clip on ones and they work perfectly fine but this new one, small and light but not a effective design i would say... hope the pictures help... This is the new capo, its called a ratchet capo.. you can check out the link if you want.. www.planetwaves.com/pgeardetails.aspx?ID=8

Erm just to add on this little capo thang. what the capo does also gives u a certain different note your already being fretted notes.
i remember my guitarist told me, there was a band, a worship band which used the capo only on the first fret and played the rest of the chords as per normal. I think it was placed on the 2nd fret of the low E string.
Erm its tough to explain when i dont have the song. But another example is...ok my band apparently loves to mess with capo too often. and on this one particular song called crash into you. The song is in F# key. So I was playing it as usual. However my guitarist had capo on the 1st fret. When they remove the capo and play F# normally. It sounds extremely terrible. I can't figure what they were doing yet. But when i do i will explain in details.

interesting. reminds me that i should learn the theory behind all that. I'm not feeling the ratchet capo. i think the normal clip one works just fine and it is sturdy.
